Colemak Wide Mod: Better Hand Separation on Standard Keyboards
Colemak Wide is a geometric modification of Colemak that shifts the right-hand key block one column outward on row-stagger keyboards. It preserves Colemak's letter arrangement while improving hand separation and reducing right-pinky strain.
Best for
Best for Colemak users who want more hand separation, lighter right-pinky load, and easier access to center-column symbols without abandoning standard Colemak's letter logic.
Main challenge
The main Colemak Wide challenge is that the right-hand block and center punctuation move together, so brackets, slash, apostrophe, and familiar right-hand reaches need deliberate retraining.
What the Wide Mod Changes
The wide mod was developed by the Colemak community (often credited to forum user SteveP) as an ergonomic layer on top of any Colemak variant. On a standard row-stagger keyboard, the right hand naturally sits slightly cramped because the stagger pushes the right-hand columns inward. The wide mod corrects this by shifting the right-hand letter block one position to the right and moving bracket and slash keys into the center gap.
The letter-to-finger assignments remain identical to standard Colemak — you still type the same letters with the same fingers. What changes is the physical position of those keys on the board, giving each hand more room and placing the right pinky closer to Enter and Shift.
Who Benefits from the Wide Mod
The wide mod is most valuable for typists using full-size or tenkeyless keyboards who notice right-pinky fatigue or cramped right-hand posture. It is less relevant for split keyboards (which already solve hand separation mechanically) or compact boards where the right block is already close to center.
Typists who experience right-hand tension on standard row-stagger boards
Colemak users who want better ergonomics without switching to a split keyboard
People who touch-type symbols frequently and want brackets in a more central position
Switching from Standard Colemak
Because the letter assignments do not change, switching from standard Colemak to Colemak Wide is primarily a matter of adjusting to the new physical geometry. Most typists adapt within a few days to a week. The center-column punctuation (brackets, slash, apostrophe) requires the most deliberate retraining since those keys move to unfamiliar positions.
SureTyping's lesson paths let you practice Colemak Wide as a separate layout track, so your standard Colemak progress is preserved. The AI trainer can target the repositioned punctuation keys specifically.
